Family tradition and secret. Chapter 1
Emily had just arrived at Grandma’s house. She was on summer vacation from her first year away at college. She was reminiscing and found a photo album. Her grandma walked in to see her granddaughter sitting on the floor with her legs crossed staring at the photos.
She blushed when she realized it was a photo album that she had taken great care of hiding all through her grandkids visits. This time, she had forgotten.
Emily looked up at Grandma and said “ are these pictures of you?”
Grandma sighed and said “ your old enough, I’m sorry if they offend you, but that is me, when I was your age.”
Emily smiled and said “ you used to catfight other girls?”
“No, it was boxing in underwear, though sometimes things got a little heated and hair was pulled, bras would be pulled off.” Emily interrupted her grandma “ that is the definition of a catfight.”
Grandma thought for a moment. Sat down with her cup of tea next to her granddaughter on the couch and said “ well, I guess you could say I had a few catfights in my day.”
“OMG, does mom know about this?” Emily turned with excitement in her eyes.
“No, your mother never showed an interest and that was a long time ago.” Grandma began to reminisce.
“I think that is wicked, cool. Who did you fight?” Emily was excited. She had always thought her grandma was just a sweet, ordinary, boring person. Knitting, playing with her cat, watching reruns of television shows.”
Grandma smiled “ you wouldn’t know any of them.” Emily was a bit disappointed till Grandma remembered “ Except your friend Becky’s Grandmother Edith. ”
Emily sat up tall “ Oh my gosh, you mean Becky’s Grandmother and you fought?”
Grandma nodded her head. “ Yes, and I seem to remember you and Becky play wrestling when you guys where younger.”
Emily now remembered her youth. “ Yes, Ms. Edith used to come over and you two would play cards. We grew up like play cousins. I just saw her yesterday. We still hang out, once in a while.”
Grandma smiled “ and do you two still rough house.”
Emily smirked “ yes, we do. I don’t know why. We just love to wrestle when we see each other, were so evenly matched and it’s great exercise.”
Grandma smiled “ it’s in the family genes, I guess. Some people just like to do it and when you meet your match it’s a wonderful way to get some stress out.”
Emily smiled “ Does Becky know about her grandma?”
“Oh, heavens, no. I’m sure Edith hasn’t told her any of this.”
Emily sensed it was time for a subject change as Grandma had gotten up to get more tea. She got up and helped her to the kitchen. “ Do you mind if I look at the pictures some more?”
“Oh, help yourself, dear.” Grandma answered.
Emily was on the floor and couldn’t help herself. She pulled out her phone and took a pic of some of those photos and sent them to Becky.
Minutes later Becky texted back “OMG! Are you sure that’s OUR grandmothers?!?”
Emily gave a thumbs up emoji.
It wasn’t a few minutes later that she got a text back with a few pics. “My grandma has an old photo album, too! This pic is of my grandma pinning yours.”
Emily looked through the pics and found one that she sent back “ this pic looks like my grandma is sitting on yours with her arms pulled back. Sorta like I did to you, yesterday.”
“Becky texted back “ I think we need a rematch. Now that we know this is a family feud ?.”
Emily sent back “lol, yeah, our mothers won’t uphold the family honor, I guess it’s our generations turn.”
Becky sent back a final text “ if your free tomorrow, my Grandma spilled the beans. They used to fight at her house sometimes. She told me all those mats where for when grandpa was into weight lifting. She just told me it’s where they fought lots of times.”
Emily texted back “ I’ll be over then.”
Grandma had sat back down and with her great vision she read a few of the lines. “ So, you’re going to uphold the family honor?”
Emily smiled and said “ I’m going to try.”
