I saw one a few months back during a working trip in Brussels. I was staying at a local hotel right in the middle of the city, a few miles away from the main EU buildings. My routine was pretty straightforward, working in the morning, dinner and drinks in the evening, then heading back to the hotel somewhere between midnight and 2 AM.
Anyway, one night, I’m taking the elevator up to my room, tired but still buzzing from the night, and as soon as the doors open, I hear this loud shouting. At first, I’m like, "Is someone having a meltdown or what?" Then I step out, and there in the hallway are two women, super well-dressed, going at it. Pushing and grabbing and trying to slap at each other while their friend (also a woman) stood there trying to break it up.
As someone who has fought in a controlled environment, this moment kind of hit differently for me. I had to get through them to get to my room, and I half-thought about stepping in myself, even though I had no reason to. So, I stop for a second, almost sizing up the situation, and then I start walking toward them. As soon as they saw me coming, they froze. The shouting stopped, they separated, and they just stared at me while their friend stood off to the side with one of them, awkward as hell.
As I walked past, all three of them were staring daggers at me like I’d just ruined their whole drama. It was a weird mix of tense and... exciting as I felt the eyes stare at me. You don’t expect to see something like that, especially in a place where people are supposed to be polished and professional.
