For those of you in the U.S. who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, Thanksgiving morning meant boys' football against the traditional rival school.

Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday.  So the Saturday before, being just 5 calendar days before kickoff, was an off day.

So the football field was available.....

....for PowderPuff football.  Girls vs girls.  Seniors vs juniors in my town, but sometimes different variations in different places.

<> Public school vs Catholic school
<> Seniors/sophomores vs Juniors freshmen (clever, in that 3 years of hatred could build up between girls)
<> College prep vs vocational/clerical (class-based rivalries)
<> A thru M last names versus N thru Z
<> East side of town versus West side

Keep in mind--girls inter-scholastic sports were rare pre-Title IX.

This was the one day a year to shine.

And to get a shiner.

I predict that here in California, the Powder Puff novelty will soon disappear.  It has been a big thing for years but that's about to change.  The California Interscholastic Federation now recognizes Girls' Flag Football as an interscholastic sport.  This was the first year that the sport was offered, and interest was substantial.  My prediction is that it will rapidly grow. 

But what do I know?

I remember my senior year there was a play straight out of The Longest Yard.  The seniors let this one junior girl rush right in untouched towards the quarterback.  She then threw a bullet that hit the other girl right in the pussy!!
There was some pushing and shoving afterwards, but the girl who got hit with the football was pretty much done for the day

One problem with this game in the Northeast, is that it is too cold.  The game should be played in the summer when the girls are wearing tee shirts and cut offs

<> Girl A lost a Student Council election in the fall to Girl B.  Girl A seeks retaliation during the game.

<> Girl A is all-state in softball, Girl B in basketball.  Seeking to prove who's the better all around athlete.

<> Girl A is the girlfriend, Girl B is the sidekick.

<> Girl A and Girl B are sisters on one team.  Girl C, on the opposing team, clothes-lines Girl A.  Girl B tells Girl C "watch your back 2nd half".
