story input needed: battle chess
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:39:17 AM »
so was watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5sJufrBmgE

and came up with a quick story I could whip up, based on either a futuristic world of cybernetic/cloned women or medieval setting of just a bunch of slaves or gladiators. that or just some purely magical/pretend world, where the pieces are sentient and act/look like real women

thoughts on what each piece would be? and would it be standard chess rules of initiator wins, or give the defending piece a chance?

initial thoughts for representations are something like...

Pawns: cute, standard catfighters. maybe batch of cheerleaders. pillowfighter?
Rook: street punk? muscled or chubby girl? mma fighter? cop?
Bishop: witch, nun, boxer...
Knight: amazon/jungle girl sort
King: super bimbo blond? cute computer geek?
Queen: powerhouse wrestler or bodybuilder. maybe super heroine or demoness?

Hi Luffy,

I read a story like this many years ago where a team of Playboy Playmates battled a team of supermodels with 'taken' pieces suffering imaginative but agonizing deaths.  It was rather disturbing actually  :)

Scrib

yeah..actually no need to kill them....enough clubbing on the head putting out cold....!!
then dragged away or put on a stretcher...!!  ;D

Captured pieces? slaves....definitely slaves (sex slaves).

Alternately, they could be sold off to raise money for charity.

No specifics on the actual question (who plays which piece) but I kinda like having singers and dancers included.

Maybe the SIZE (or skills) of the woman determines her place on the board:
Gymnasts (5'0" and 100 lbs) = pawns
wrestling Divas (5'5" to 5'8" and up to 140 lb) = rooks
tennis players (Venus Williams, Sharapova, etc) = bishops
Oscar winning actresses/Grammy Singers = knights
Bodybuilders = Queen (the most powerful piece on the board)
Centerfold = King (everybody wants to capture HER)

mostly thinking on your lines, Ginny. strength based on the piece's worth

and no death involved when I can help it in my stories. so it'd be strange or magical enough that it's just constant knockouts

any thoughts on the "offensive piece always wins" concept? if it wouldn't be too predictable, it would make some interesting stuff when a cornered pawn or king suddenly takes down a rook or queen due to chance

RE: thoughts on the "offensive piece always wins" concept? if it wouldn't be too predictable, it would make some interesting stuff when a cornered pawn or king suddenly takes down a rook or queen due to chance

Personally, I love unpredictability in the outcome of (almost) any fight - absent the imperative to push the narrative in a particular direction (as in a series or a novella). The James Bond films are illustrative as it seems the villains always defeat Bond in the first encounter and then lose in the end. (It's a device to show the bad guys are 'worthy adversaries' and keep the spectre (!) of defeat in the audience's mind to ratchet up the suspense for the climatic confrontation.

After posting, I thought more about the "gymnast as pawn" concept and realized how unworkable it may be as a narrative device (given the size/strength disparity between gymnast-bodybuilder...etc., etc.) So I was considering the idea of setting a time limit on the conflict - thinking of pro-wrestling here - where after a set time "supporting pieces" (i.e., other pawns, or knights, rooks, etc. within "range" (whatever that is) could jump in to help their 'team mate'.

Of course, if not deftly handled, it could devolve into a free for all which would not only be extremely hard to write, but also (sort of) defeat the whole purpose of setting a structured environment. But it could make for interesting uneven contests (two/three petite little gymnasts taking on a bodybuilder, or two singers taking on an elite athlete like Serena Williams...etc)

Not sure where to go with this as I've - for the most part - avoided doing stories with what I consider and unwieldy number or protagonists. Those I have tried, I've made an effort to restrict the participants in fights at any one time or to limit the fights to consecutive contests...winner moves on, etc.

There are numerous 'conflict resolution' programs that can aid in coming up with outcomes more or less random....starting with a simple random number generator (high number wins) to computer simulators.

The FCBA (Female Celebrity Boxing Association) uses a system based on gaming dice and weighted skill factors. There's a full explanation of the "simguy" system on their web site at:

I like the idea myself, but in my personal opinion, I think it would work better with skilled fighters, not catfighters. Pulling hair, scratching, striking the groin, and calling each other names can only go so far. This could work in a paramilitary setting, with the pawns being the least experienced, etc. Two more things for the record: actually, white only wins 55% of the time in regular chess, and I last seen this idea utilized in some spy stories. The theme was done very well.

I agree with Mongoose here, Luffy.  You need something comic book/fantasy-like for this.  It'd have to be like an action movie or fighting video game, with wacky occupations and backgrounds.  Something like this:

Class type (highest to lowest in terms of power/skills):

Athlete (Boxer/Wrestler, Gymnast, Tennis Player, Runner).
Bimbo type (Supermodel, Pornstar, Playmate/Magazine Model)
Spy/Covert Ops type (Secret Agent/Assassin, Soldier, Hacker)
Martial Artist (Kung Fu Master, Ninja, Trainee)
Magic (Sorceress, Witch, Nun)
School (Headmistress, Teacher, Schoolgirl)
Outdoorsy (Amazon, Hunter/Bounty Hunter, Cowgirl, Safari Girl)
Power (Businesswoman, Mobster, Heiress)
etc, so on and so forth.

King=Most valuable piece.  Not necessarily the toughest.  The Power pieces should go here.  A Businesswoman conducts efforts against another King (General/Politician/Mobster/Rival Businesswoman/etc).
Queen=The toughest piece.  1st tier.  Could be a Sorceress vs. Superheroine vs. Legendary Swordfighter.
Rook=2nd tier fighter but not necessarily the most conventional occupation.  I am thinking Secret Agent vs. Kung Fu Master.
Bishop=Someone with authority.  A 2nd tier fighter but not necessarily a strong fighter.  A more conventional occupation.  Nun vs. Teacher/Headmistress vs. Celebrity/Heiress/Athlete (could be funny to cast a real celeb or athlete).
Knight=Soldier types.  3rd tier.  Amazon vs. Soldier vs. Mobster/Gangster vs. Ninja vs. Witch vs. Boxer
Pawns=Military or Police Units/Security Guards/Models/Actresses/Martial Arts Trainees/etc

Of course, height, weight, appearances all depend on the individual character themselves.  It would be better to have some unpredictability.  Still, when a cornered King is trapped against multiple Rooks, the King will obviously be unable to fight and thus, back into a corner and cry.  A checkmate scene might also be Rated X.....

Epilogue should be all the pieces of the losing team captured, tied up, and humiliated in a confined area (after all, the winner takes the pieces after knocking them out of play).

all useful info, and can apply a lot of it. can do the mismatched pieces for each, and think i'll include the wildcard of slight chance of the attacking piece's loss. and most of the pieces will have the skill to actually fight, apart from the pawns or king
