I'm with the "agreed upon" crowd. Yes, it was an extremely hurtful, humiliating experience for the losing couple. That may well be a source of great excitement for the winners, the onlooker, and maybe even the losers. Losing sucks. Its painful, humiliating and can take weeks, or even a month to recover. But we choose to fight knowing this is a possible outcome. And even losing, well after the recovery is over, can be an erotic experience in one's mind. If the agreement had been for the stakes to be carried out in private, then I would say that should be adhered to.
