IRL Matches & COVID
« on: May 14, 2021, 11:47:54 PM »
My gf and I did irl matches with friends both as singles and tag team before covid rocked our planet. We have both had the vaccine but still not sure about irl meet ups yet. Anyone have thoughts on irl matches?

Just my opinion , might be a bit personal  but if you and your girl are vaccinated do you have someway to prove that ( paperwork) or something like that and if your opponents can prove to you they have been vaccinated  the 4 of you should be good to go. And no spectators that can't prove they've been vacaccinared. I've got an Irl match coming up but one of us hasn't been vaccinated yet, but as soon as that happens we will meet on the mat, again just my opinion.   Good luck

Assuming the opening post is legitimately vaccinated, I'd advise trusting your opponents to be legitimately vaccinated as well.  I've seen stories about Covid-19 vaccine forgeries being illegally distributed, which just adds more confusion.
I do underground recreational pro wrestling in real life.  No feds or promotions, just arranged meetings with people to wrestle.  I do have a bit of ring training and hope to get more in the future.  I have done some cyber pro too.

I took my International Certificate of Vaccination (folding yellow booklet) and had them record the vaccine in it. That little white card they give you is useless for international travel and much easier to forge. You should be able to take that card to your doctor and get it entered into the ICV. The yellow ICV is accepted all over the world as proof of vaccination (yellow fever, typhoid, etc).

Think of it as your "covid passport" when travel reopens.. It isn't a burden to carry since some countries require proof of various vaccines already before permitting entry. I also have pictures of each page on my phone, on a usb stick and in the cloud. Did the same with my passport title page.

I would still be in favor of the cautious side, while things are improving, you still need to be watchful, from what i have heard (first responder family) Having  vaccine DOES NOT assure you will not get the virus, the virus is to build your immune system to know what the virus is, and then send your antibodies to fight it.
Having the vaccine DOES NOT and CAN NOT promise you will NOT get COVID.
You need to remember weather you had it once, or just a carrier of it but did not fall ill, you can get and or spread the virus. if none of that applies to you, then who ever you do a match  with can and will spread it to you.
It may seem as if it will not phase you, however if you catch it and bring it back home unaware you got it, you  may spread it to some one either in your friends or family if not all, the issue with that is if anyone you know , is diabetic,COPD, or a weakened immune system they not only WILL get it but they are  higher risk of developing  respiratory issues and or might be fatal. Those of us who do ill are beyond anxious to get back at it, but honestly till you see a decline in the hospitals I would work out and stay away from competition. You need to look at it like this,,, Do i do one match that might be you last, or do you wait, and go in with higher immune system, and no fear, or wonder .

I would hate to go into a match no matter the style wondering if when i got home and my diabetic son coughs is related, that s a lot to carry into a match wondering if this the day you catch it. just my opinion

I’m responding to this post because the question has broad everyday life applicability. The CDC released updated guidelines on fully vaccinated individuals a few days ago. Basically, vaccinated persons may “resume activities without wearing masks or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance”  Here’s the full recommendation: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html#anchor_1619526549276

I believe the guidelines are scientifically sound and I’ve already started taking my mask off in public in certain situations. However, the new updates are a marked change from previous and experts warn they’re not applicable to all situations. See https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/05/14/996879305/confused-by-cdcs-latest-mask-guidance-heres-what-weve-learned

So, if I were a “real life” catfighter, would I resume activity? For me, personally, no not yet. Aside from risks of close contact with people I don’t know, I’d want to see COVID cases continue to drop, and follow up data on infection rates under the new guidelines. Although your risk, if vaccinated, may be low, COVID is still with us. I had four cases last week, including one death. That’s my bias, I have too much respect for this f*&$#er.
Don’t bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be boring. Spend thirty seconds in my head. That’ll freak you right out.

It seems that there are protocols for MMA fighters to do this safely, so I would think it would be safe to fight as long as both parties follow a similar protocol.  That could mean being quarantined for 10 days before hand.  Would it be worth 10 days of isolation just to have a fight?  Each person would have to answer that for themselves.  I would encourage everyone thinking about it to first educate themselves on the protocols being followed by responsible leagues in combat sports, and adopt them, before fighting.

You might want to consider the age and health of both yourself and your opponent since age and chronic health conditions play a HUGE role in covid risk. If you are "getting on in years" or have chronic health issues you probably don't want to chance it but if you are younger and in good health your risk is similar to many other daily risks we all live with like the 1% chance of dying in a fall or 1% chance of dying in a car crash.

Here is the percentage by age of those who have died from covid in the U.S. as of May 12th.

30% - 85 and older
28% - 75-84
22% - 65-74
15% - 50-64
3% - 40-49
1% - 30-39
0.4% - 18-29
0.0005% - 0-17

I rounded the larger numbers. Here is my source for this: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1191568/reported-deaths-from-covid-by-age-us/.

Assess your own situation and make an informed decision.

Just my 2 cents...  but if you are vaccinated statistically you should be in pretty good shape regardless of the other couple.  If they want to take the chance and lie to you, that is their problem.  Your chances are probably better that you'd be hurt than infected and depending on the vaccine you got the impact should be pretty low.  If you want extra certainty you could probably all go get a Covid Test together or at the same place so you can check the paperwork.  They offer the quick ones plenty of places now.  Regardless I would probably stay away from Grandma and Grandpa or anybody else that is high risk afterword for a couple weeks.  But other than that you should be good to go.

It the US, I know if you get the vaccine they give you a card of your 1st and 2nd doses for Pfiezer and Moderno. I believe you get one for J&J. Even then Pfiezer and Moderno have been shown to be the most effective and safe, with J&J only 73% effective. Currently an outbreak of COVID in the NY Yankees happened recently after they got the J&J vaccine.

My wife and I are vaccinated. Currently we're waiting to be completely out of the pandemic before we start anything with IRL matches.

Again, not a doctor, just my thoughts.  I wouldn't trust the cards.  They gave me two of them and I understand there is a pretty robust market for fakes out there.  I believe if I remember right the vaccines are between 95% and 99% effective.  Even in the slim chance you get covid for almost everybody you have no symptoms.  The US News keeps reporting breathlessly the people who got vaccinated and now tested positive for Covid (Basketball players, celebrities, etc.)  What they keep failing to mention is almost none of them are actually symptomatic.  Just tested positive.  If I remember right about a month ago they were reporting a total of 77 Covid Deaths among those who had been fully vaccinated.  At that time there was something like 100 Million people in the US fully vaccinated.  That puts your odds of dying at about 1 in 1.299 Million.  You are about 2x as likely to be struck by lightning (not killed by it... just struck).  Your lifetime odds of dying in a car crash are 1 in 608.  Not saying it is the right time for everybody or even you.  If you are comfortable with the odds, I say it is time to live your life again.  If not, you have waited this long... another few months certainly wouldn't hurt.
