Favorite SRW Apartment House Match

Question for the fans of the old apartment house wrestling matches that Sports Review published.  What were your three favorite matched? Here are mine:

August 1977 Claire vs Olivia. I thought Olivia was so sexy and she reminded me of an older neighbor that lived across the street from me.

December 1977 Lenia vs Faith. Very one sided match. Faith, the one who took the beating, reminded me of my friend's mom who I always fantasized about seeing in a wrestling match.

February 1978 Debbie vs Helene. Another one sided affair. Debbie had that tough trashy look about her.

Tiffany vs Desdemona, the War between the Jet Set Beauties! Two sophisticated heiresses with a long history of rivalry finally fight each other in a titanic battle that ends with both stripped naked and rolling on the floor! The models are Helen O'Connell and Gretchen Gayle, an extremely well matched pair who seem to be identical in height, weight, and body type. And, the facial expressions in their fight are awesome.

Always an interesting topic.   Sports Review Wrestling was the predecessor to most of what we have today in this area.   It has literally been a half century since the magazine began to publish these stories in 1973, but they still represent an entertaining body of stories and pictures for this genre.   While the stories were OK to good (mostly just OK), the critical element was the great photography that accompanied the stories.  A great round of applause goes to Theo Ehret, the photographer who brought these stories to life with his wonderful work with the models involved.

Along those lines, I will do my top three, which includes one match that technically was not in SRW but in a sister magazine published by the same company.   The chief element to my choices is the photos themselves, with the story providing the backdrop for our imaginations.

Ben Strong Wrestling, June 1975, Eloise vs. Kathy—not technically in SRW but part of the lineage of matches and it was later reprinted in one of the anthology Battling Girls magazines they published later.  The accompanying story about two women competing for a job is pretty good, but the women’s expressions and the positions shown are captivating to me.  It’s my favorite picture set from all of these magazines.

SRW, November 1977, Karen vs. Diane—one of the better stories as two sisters go at it, with a very good picture set accompanying it.

SRW, September 1977, Irene vs. Natalie—the story of a disk jockey vs. a pin-up model is OK, but the picture set is strikingly beautiful.  The brunette Irene is one of the most gorgeous models they ever used for these stories (IMHO).

An honorable mention goes to SRW, March 1975, Cynara vs. Denise II—the rematch of their first championship battle turns nude.   SRW puts black bars over the breast and crotch areas while showing the models nude otherwise, and it has a very titillating effect on the picture set.   The story is OK, but the pictures are what makes this so arousing.

Also, another honorable mention goes out to Tiffany vs Desdemona that shotgun555 mentioned above.   Triumph Studios, a mail order company which specialized in this genre, put out several picture sets of Gretchen vs. Helen in various matches at that time.   (Count me as Team Gretchen all the way).   They clearly were presented as big rivals of each other.  They were evenly matched (as portrayed) and you felt every fight between them was going to be long and very even to the end.  The SRW picture set was typical of the great work and the chemistry these two seemed to have with each other on film.

While SRW continued to churn out these stories and photo sets into the 1980s, the best work of the series was done in the earlier years from 1973 to 1978 or so.

Diago vs Vivian (February 1983) - Sue Berry (Vivian) was my favorite apartment house wrestler. She loses a one sided match to stronger and cruel Diago.

Jenny vs Camille (March 1977) - A nice back and forth match between the powerful nurse Camille and the quick stewardess Jenny. It was one of the most competitive matches with Jenny getting the win. I wish they had a rematch but this is the last we saw of Camille.

Judy vs Janet (December 1973) - These two battle over a boyfriend. This was more of a catfight with biting, scratching, choking and punching. Brunette Judy wins in the Dec. 1973 issue but Janet wins in the nude Battling Girls #3 issue.

honorable mention

Amanda vs Tammy (June 1982) - This was an even matchup between two friends Amanda (Sue Berry) and Tammy. Even though they were best friends they fought hard to win. Tammy overpowers and pins Amanda for the win.

Kelly vs Nell (October 1982) - Nell a spoiled rich girl in her first apartment wrestling match takes on Kelly (Sue Berry). Nell has her moments but it mostly a one sided fight with Kelly winning.

Denise vs Leonora (November 1976) - Newcomer Leonora wrestles with veteran Denise. A good matchup between the more agressive Leonora and more skilled Denise. Leonora comes close to winning but Denise pulls off the win.

Any of the Cynara matches were great. Also like the sales lady "impromptu" match. Younger blonde in a bikini and older lady in bra and panties. Really like the match Npom has for his picture.  Love to see more.

Let me preface this by saying I was 11 when I got my first issue with Apartment House Wrestling – It was my porn!  Can’t say I ever read any of the stories, just the captions.

My first issue and still one of my favorites was a1976 “Annual” issue  - Apartment House Wrestling Photo Album – A Pictorial Collection of the Sports Most Exciting Women.  That issue is still one of my favorites with a sampling of about 25 or so pictures from 4 or 5 different matches including

January 1977 – Gail vs Kyla – My favorite cover picture of all time!

May 1978 – Madge vs Hester

Spring 1978 – Alice vs Lynnie

And ANYTHING with Cynara!

At some point I got my hands on The Winter 2975 issue of Battling Girls and I was in heaven!

Between getting the magazines at the newsstand and then years later off eBay, I think I have maybe half of the AHW issues.

The only bad thing was of all the original issues I get at the newsstand, at some point for some reason I cannot fathom now, I cut the cover and pages out of the magazines and put them in a 3-ring binder… GRRR!

What memories

Interesting topic and nice posts.

If I may offer a dissenting comment ????

This was definitely not my cup of tea. I loved - and still love - old school female pro wrestling, and it seemed that an apartment house story was taking the place of a pro story.

Now, thinking of an apartment house wrestler opening the door and seeing Vivian Vachon or the Fabulous Moolah or Beverly Shade!
