Chapter 4
“Joni, I'm worried about you.”
I look across the desk at the woman who a little over a year ago tried to beat me to death with a baseball bat. Earlier that year she sent the two psycho Amazons...Kayla and Marie...to try and cripple me in a series of fights she orchestrated. Maybe calling Marie an Amazon is a bit of a stretch. She's more of warrior dwarf than a warrior Amazon. But that's for another story. Jenn Peccavi has been trying to rid the world of me for almost two years. Just because she mistook me for a reporter who wrote an article exposing her as an up and coming crime lord. I managed to escape her clutches but not before she broke my leg, smashed a drinking glass into my forehead, wrecked my relationship with Joe, linked me to Gemma Rox, and set the two crazed bimbos on me. My life truly sucks at the moment.
But hey, why should I complain? She did drag me into her office one night from a seedy apartment I called my home with Batgirl. She performed her own special kind of drug rehabilitation on me...she stuck a Baby Glock in my mouth and said if she ever caught me taking another Oxycontin she would turn my head into a canoe. After trying so hard to kill me, I now owe her my life. Oh how things change. Of course I now work for her. I have committed crimes which could lead me someday to ride a needle to Heaven. Or most likely Hell, in my case.
I can't say I don't enjoy the work I do for her. I just wish my partner in crime wasn't Gemma Rox. But that is for another story too.
“Jenn, I.....”
“Don't interrupt me, Joni. You don't focus on your job any longer. Now I have to deal with a bunch of bikers who should be riding around the Midwest selling meth to immigrant workers. I have to deal with you getting your ribs crushed by one of those crazed bikers. And now you have an aggravated assault warrant for trying to kill one of those bikers with a banjo! I'll fix this but you need to start listening to me. I really do have your best interests at heart.”
Best interests? Yeah right!
“Jenn, I'm sorry, but I didn't start any of this. Those bikers attacked me first! The last one attacked me and Gemma. I had to do something.”
“I know that, Joni. I know. Just lay low and let me fix this. No more antics, okay?”
I lower my head and stare at the floor. Joe used to say the same things to me. I nod my head and whisper, “Okay Jenn.”
“Good girl! I am assigning Marie to watch over you.”
As soon as those words were out of her mouth, Marie and I both jump to our feet, “WHAT?!?!” We say in unison.
“Hell no, Jenn! I'm not babysitting that cxnt!”
“Jenn, I don't need someone watching out for me.”
“Why not Gemma? Why does it have to be me? No Jenn, Please!”
“I need to find Batgirl, Jenn. I can't do that with a crazed dwarf looking over my shoulder.”
“Fuck you, swamp rat!!!”
“Shut the fuck up you worthless midget!”
Jenn apparently had enough of this. Before either of us knew what was going on she stormed from behind her desk, grabbed us both by the hair, and rammed our heads together so hard we both immediately dropped to our butts.
“NOW LISTEN TO ME YOU TWO! I AM IN CHARGE HERE, NOT YOU TWO WORTHLESS LITTLE WHORES! YOU WILL BOTH DO AS I SAY! JONICA, MARIE AND KAYLA ARE ASSIGNED TO MAKE SURE YOU STAY OUT OF TROUBLE! JESSIKA WILL WATCH AFTER GEMMA! MARIE, YOU WILL DO YOUR JOB AND DO IT PROPERLY, OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY! DO BOTH OF YOU UNDERSTAND?!?!”
Both of us managed to lift our eyes just enough to whisper, “Yes ma'am.
“GOOD! Now get the fuck out of my office.”
I stand up and sway a little on my feet, but Kayla helps me keep my balance. I walk quickly from the room and go to the little gym Jenn has set up next to her office. There I hope to find a little peace and quiet to get my thoughts straight.
Of course I don't get a chance.
The door bangs open and Marie rushes in like a tiny whirlwind dressed in a red miniskirt and white tank. She kicks her sandals off and shoves me. “Ok bitch, we settle this now!!!”
I don't want to fight. My ribs still hurt and a headache is threading it's way through my skull, but my hatred for Marie overrides much everything else. Before I know it I lunge off the workout bench I was sitting on and slam into Marie with everything I have. The only problem is Marie is quicker than I am...broken ribs or not.
She sidesteps me with ease and hammers a quick combo of jabs into my face. I drop to one knee beside her and she slams a quick kick into the small of my back knocking me onto all fours. Before I can recover, she grabs my hair and yanks my face chin up to look into hers. I feel blood dribbling from my mashed lips and my cheek starting to swell, but fiery hatred burns under my skin. “I've been waiting for this for a long, long time you piece of shit!” She growls just before I bring my right fist all the way from the floor and slam it between her little gymnast legs. The punch lands with such effectiveness I feel my knuckles drive into her pubic bone. Her cute, angelic face...which only moments before was twisted with angry hatred...goes blank and her eyes open wide from shock. Her mouth forms a silent “O” then she drops to her knees in front of me lowering her hands to her crotch. I push off the floor with both feet and slam my right elbow into the side of her head. She flops to the floor in a heap. Getting to my feet, I kick her in the back and kidneys several times while screaming obscenities with each blow delivered. But Marie isn't trying to defend herself or roll away. She is out cold.
“Do you feel better now?” Jenn asks from the doorway. I never saw Her and Kayla enter the room. Fortunately for me, Jenn's right arm is holding Kayla back. I turn on my heel and head for the other door. Behind me Jenn says, “I'll send Kayla and Marie over to your apartment later. There better be no repeats of this or I swear I will handcuff you both and drop you off on a mangrove island in the basin alone.”
I nod my head and leave the room.
Once outside the building, I take a deep breath and stroll next door to my apartment building, which is incidentally owned by Jenn. Just like I am owned by her, I think to myself.
I ride the elevator to my apartment. The place seems darker and emptier than before. Batgirl, where are you?
I sit down and stare out at the purple clouds building over the Gulf. A storm is coming. How ironic! There's a storm building in my life too!
I catch a glimpse of white from the corner of my eye. Looking closer I see it's an envelope laying in the entryway. I pick it up and open the letter:
Dearest Jonica,
Please stop looking for me. Your life is in real danger. I wish I could come home, but I must stay away for your safety. I am leaving Louisiana and I'm not coming back. I'm doing this for you, even though it is breaking my heart.
Thanks for saving my life,
Batgirl (A)
xxx I wad the letter in my hand as I drop to my knees; pressing the paper to my face as I sob.
To be continued.....
