And its one I am very passionate about because my father was......it has to do with former Beatle ...George Harrison.....and his song

"What is Life"

This song is one Harrison wrote after he left the Beatles.  Harrison had a great career as a solo artist....one I personally feel he does not get enough credit for.  Harrison left the Beatles in january 1969 and he considered it an "emancipatory event" as it got him away from what he felt were the restrictions put on him by the band and the label.  he began thinking of going solo in November 1968 when he went to Woodstock and spent considerable time with Bob Dylan.  In mid-1969 he was doing some collaborative work with Billy Preston and it was while driving to see Preston in London that he conceived of "What is Life"....he actually thought up the lyrics...which have become so famous....on that trip...

What I feel, I can't say
But my love is there for you any time of day
But if it's not love that you need
Then I'll try my best to make everything succeed.

Tell me, what is my life without your love?
And tell me, who am I without you, by my side?

"What is Life" became #1 in Europe...which is wild considering Harrison was going to offer the song to Preston to record but at the last minute kept it for himself......and the rest.....as they say.....is history

Another from the Michelle Archives.....and my last........this is my father's favorite song....

Its by former Beatle ......George Harrison.......and its...."My Sweet Lord"

The song was released in November 1970 as part of the famous "All Things Must Pass" album.  The song topped the charts worldwide and marked the debut of Harrison's debuting the "slide guitar" technique.  The recording has been described as a "painstakingly crafted tableau" of sound, beginning with a bank of "chiming" acoustic guitars and the "flourish" of zither strings that introduces Harrison's slide-guitar motif.  This was to be Harrison's signature and the sound he would be known for the rest of his life.  Harrison performed "My Sweet Lord" at the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971 and it remains the most popular composition from his post-Beatles career.  The song is # 460 on Rollings Stone's List of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The lyrics to "My Sweet Lord" reflect Harrison's often-stated desire for a direct relationship with God, and were worded with a simplicity that made them identifiable to all believers, regardless of religious denomination.

Well...inspite of pleas for me to stay away......The Michelle Archives are making a Holiday weekend appearance.....

Mainly because for me its George Harrison week......why you might ask?.....because I said so!

I have previously posted 2 songs that were probably Harrison's best loved from his solo career....but now...I want to post my personal favorite

This song is spectacular and the music video is priceless  The song reached #1 in the US...ironically it broke the tie for #1 singles that existed between former Beatles ...Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr.  McCartney leads with 9 #1's all time as a solo/former Beatle.

This was to be the last #1 song from a former Beatle and the last for Harrison.  It was the only #1 of Harrison's not written by him and not with religious overtones.

The music video for this song, featuring Harrison, received as many accolades as the song itself and it truly is a hoot for anyone who is familiar with the usually serious Harrison.
The video I refer to in the link was directed by Gary Weis and has Harrison sitting and playing in a study.   As the song progresses, furniture and knick-knacks (like a stuffed squirrel, sentient chainsaw, and mounted warthog) begin to dance along with the song. In the middle of the video, Harrison (through the use of a stunt double) performs a backflip from his chair and follows it with a dance routine before jumping back to his seat.  there was a rumor for a long time that Harrison himself did the stunts but that was later refuted.  I still love to believe George did the stunts just because its fun to think about it.
The video received significant airplay, and was nominated for three MTV VMAs.

George Harrison may have underplayed his sense of humor at times, but it was always there.  Search for the "ohnothimagen" radio ads used to promote the "Extra Texture" album, or his gleeful desecration of his own "All Things Must Pass" cover, found inside the reissued CD.  (see Below)  He was also the only Beatle to make an appearance in Eric Idle's brilliant spoof "The Rutles."

Even while guarding his privacy jealously, he did it with a twinkle in his eye.  At the entrance to his estate was a series of signs, with "No Trespassing" listed in many languages.  There was a Union Jack next to the words "No Trespassing", with the same message in the appropriate language next to the flags of many other countries.  Listed last was a US flag, with the translation "Get Your Ass Outta Here!!"

If you did make it to the inner sanctum, you might be subject to one of George's favorite jokes.  He would often bring first time visitors into a study whose primary feature was a large picture window overlooking a beautiful man-made lake on the property.  After a few minutes, George would be informed that he had a phone call that couldn't wait, and he'd politely excuse himself.  The lake was positioned in such a way that from the house it appeared to be one unbroken expanse of water, but was actually three different levels, with the middle one having stepping stones that were invisible from the house.  He'd wait until the visitor had enough time for their attention to be drawn to the window, when they'd incredulously be treated to the sight of George apparently walking on water outside....   

No wonder the guy hung out with Peter Sellers and the Monty Python troupe!

Another from the Michelle Archives.......

This is one from the Moody Blues.....one of the more prolific bands in history........a band that when most people think of them think of the iconic "Nights in White Satin".

But my favorite song of theirs is one a bit more fun paced...and one that never ceases to get to me....

Its "The Story In Your Eyes" and has some of the best guitar work (which I am so partial to being a guitar player) I have heard.
The song was released in 1971 and written by band member Justin Hayward.  It is part of the wonderful "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor " album.
"The Story in Your Eyes" features a repeated electric guitar riff, a propulsive yet elegant bass line, and Justin Hayward on lead vocals, while incremental use of a Mellotron and a choral background generates an expansive, rhapsodic sound. "The Story in Your Eyes" was the Moody Blues' final single to feature only the Mellotron as it would be supplanted by the chamberlin, a similar instrument in time for their next album, "Seventh Sojourn".

As with most Moody Blues Album covers....this one for "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" is beautiful and priceless.

My song of the day is Elton John's CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROW DIRT COWBOY, the title track from one of his best albums, a musical autobiography cloaked in metaphor.  The hit single was "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," but the whole album is well worth a listen.  Many years later Elton recorded a worthy follow-up called THE CAPTAIN AND THE KID, but for now enjoy the original title track.
