Another from the Michelle Archives.....

And this one is different...and so very special.....

It was one a father shared with his 12 year old daughter so many years ago on her birthday.....

He took her to a concert by the great Elmer Bernstein in San Francisco.....yeah...you heard me right....a concert with an orchestra :)

And we heard an arrangement I have never forgotten...and I hope never will....its one we have all heard before...no matter our age.....

Its the theme song to the movie......."The Magnificent Seven"....the movie with Yul Brynner....James Coburn...Steve McQueen.....Robert Vaughn....Eli Wallach

If you haven't seen it......Please do......I don't care who you are....what you like.....you'll love this movie.....
Its just simple Good versus Evil......in its most wonderful cinematic form....

And Elmer Bernstein put together a score for the ages.....its one that should be heard in concert.....live......it has few peers.....

His scores for The Magnificent Seven and To Kill a Mockingbird were ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighth and seventeenth greatest American film scores of all time, respectively, on the list of AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores. Bernstein, Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner, and Jerry Goldsmith are the only composers to have two scores listed, and are therefore in second place for the most scores on the list, behind John Williams, who has three

Hearing it .....it never fails to evoke memories of Yul Brynner....Steve McQueen.....and their screen presence.....and others too

And a magical evening a little girl had with her father on her birthday some 22 years ago....

So here we go....its Elmer Bernstein conducting....the theme from "The Magnificent Seven".......from 1960

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iteRKvRKFA

Thanks Dad......you made my day.......and my life....I miss you  :)

I nominate this for the best post in this thread :)

Although I'm a Goldsmith man to the end, Bernstein was a fabulous composer, and his Copeland influenced Americana /western scores were flat out wonderful.

If you enjoyed The Magnificent Seven, here's one cut from the same cloth, his rousing theme from The Sons Of Katie Elder.

Thanks for bringing up Western movie themes. Great songs as well as the overall beauty of a Western movie (especially the scenic background of these movies). My favorite Western movie theme is from the iconic "The Good,The Bad and The Ugly". This is the Hugo Montenegro version, which is the best in my opinion.

Well, I'd have to go back to Morricone's original, and for good measure toss in The Ecstasy Of Gold -

http://youtu.be/nOr0na6mKJQ

For other more recent western scores, you can always try the following :

James Newton Howard's sumptuous Wyatt Earp:

Lennie Neihaus - Unforgiven:

Bruce Broughton's stirring Silverado:

John Barry's Dances With Wolves:

Or more vintage :

Jerry Goldsmith - Take A Hard Ride :

Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In The West :

Okie... here it is... My most favorite song in the entire world... By probably my favorite all-round band ever.... Three Doors down....

I'm gonna give a little Michelle'sque preview of the song.... It was released in August 2003 as the third single from the album "Away from the Sun", which IMO, was their best album ever. Even though the song did not hit that big upon release, shying behind other amazing songs on the album like "Kryptonite" and "When I'm gone", it slowly gained popularity following the Iraq War, as it became the anthem for deployed troops and their families.

Brad Arnold states that the main inspiration for this song was his now ex-wife. The song is about being away from someone and missing them, and it's not about how long you've gone, it's about the loneliness that comes with missing someone. It's also about a state of peace that comes with dreaming of the missed loved one.

As a personal touch... This song means a lot to me... I've always been the traveling type, whether it's short sporadic trips, or just complete re-locations which always put me away from those I love the most. And that endeared this song so much to me, warm tears always flow whenever I hear it, wherever I may be. Even currently, as I live in London, I only see my love, Alexis on weekends, as she lives in Manchester (a 3'ish hour distance for those who don't know)... And now, it even heralds a new deeper meaning when I'm away from certain special people I met on here, when our schedules and time differences take us away from each other.... It just beautifully haunts me, and captures the essence of my own existence...

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same

But all the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreaming of your face

I'm here without you, baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you, baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you, baby

But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight it's only you and me, yeah.

The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go, oh, yeah, yeah

Everything I know, and anywhere I go (oh whoa)
It gets hard but it won't take away my love (oh whoa)
And when the last one falls
When it's all said and done
It gets hard but it wont take away my love, whoa, oh, oh

Ladies and Gentlemen.... Here without you... by Three Doors Down...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPBzTxZQG5Q

** I'm dedicating this song to you Chelley... Cuz now, when I hear it on weekends, it's you who I think of, and gets that warm tear rolling down my cheeks.... I love you babe <3 **

Today we have the Rolling Stones, with SHE'S SO COLD from 1980's EMOTIONAL RESCUE album.  As with many of the best Stones tracks, there's an immediate groove that centers around a great guitar riff and their almost-telepathic rhythm section.  The song made it to about the mid-20's in the charts near the end of that year, but garnered a substantial amount of airplay on AOR oriented radio.  It's something of a latter-day Rolling Stones classic, and still turns up on the radio and in concert on a reasonably regular basis.  Enjoy!

Okie okie... Time for a TACKY song.... Tacky, but still awesome as heck!! And this one is dedicated to my lovely, lovely partner in crime, soul-mate, and soon-to-be wed-locked; the GORGEOUS Michelle Miles <3

When you came in the air went out.
And every shadow filled up with doubt.
I don't know who you think you are,
But before the night is through,
I wanna do bad things with you.

I'm the kind to sit up in his room.
Heart-sick and eyes filled up with blue.
I don't know what you've done to me,
But I know this much is true:
I wanna do bad things with you.
OK.

When you came in the air went out.
And all those shadows there, are filled up with doubt.
I don't know who you think you are,
But before the night is through,
I wanna do bad things with you.
I wanna do real bad things with you.

Ow, ooh.

I don't know what you've done to me,
But I know this much is true:
I wanna do bad things with you.
I wanna do real bad things with you.

"Dear Daily Mail"

This is a classically brilliant song by Amanda Palmer....I admit it, I never heard of her until now but I totally LOVE her now!!! I guess she was giving a concert in the UK 'n she had a wardrobe malfunction, a 'nip slip', for a few seconds. Well, one of those derfwad rag sheets The Daily Mail (never heard of it either until now) did a whole article just on her nip slip, ignoring the concert, the songs, the performance.  ::)  ::)  ::)

Well, in a live concert a few days later, Amanda Palmer had her own answer to the dipsticks at the Daily Mail....this brilliant song where she bares her soul along with, ummmm, watch the video, you'll find out!

Another from the Michelle Archives......and one of personal favs...

From one of my favorite artists.....Chris Isaak.......and his song......"Wicked Games"....

"Wicked Game" is a 1989 song by Chris Isaak from his third studio album "Heart Shaped World"  Despite being released as a single in 1989, it did not become a hit until it was later featured in the David Lynch film "Wild at Heart" (1990). Lee Chesnut, an Atlanta radio station music director who loved David Lynch films, began playing the song and it quickly became a nationwide top ten hit in January 1991, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the first hit song of his career. James Calvin Wilsey played the distinctive lead guitar solo on the song and his string work is truly awesome...and haunting.

The song is written in the mode of B Dorian. Through several years, many different versions and arrangements of the song were made before the final version was released. Both the bassline and drums (except the cymbals) were sampled from previous recordings of the song and then looped.

Chris also has another song I adore..........of many songs of his that I love.......but this one is also special..... I highly recommend....."Blue Hotel"

So here we go....from 1989......its Chris Isaak.....and......."Wicked Games"......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xwTywB_3UU

And the music video....is AWESOME!

The most well-known music video of the song was directed by Herb Ritts, shot in Hawaii and featured top model Helena Christensen rolling and frolicking on the beach with Isaak. It was filmed in black and white. Christensen was topless and Isaak was shirtless through most of the video, although clever camera angles concealed any actual nudity.

This is for you Ewa my love.....you and me forever....Michelle and Ewa......its all about ME.......enjoy :)

Blue hotel on a lonely highway.

Another from the Michelle Archives...

Its the late great Roy Orbison.......and his great hit......."Crying"

To say Orbison was one of the greats would be an understatement....and "Crying" is maybe his signature song.....with his four octave voice....Orbison hits all the right notes.....

The song was released as a 45rpm single by Monument Records in July 1961 and made #1 on the United States Cashbox chart for a week on October 7, 1961, although it peaked at #2 on the rival Billboard Hot 100.
In 1987, Orbison rerecorded the song as a duet with K.D. Lang as part of the soundtrack for the motion picture, Hiding Out. Their collaboration won the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The duet version was a minor US chart hit for the two, peaking at #42 on the Hot Country Singles chart, though it was a more substantial hit in the UK in 1992, reaching #13 on the UK Singles Chart.
In 2002, "Crying" was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it #69 on their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

"Crying" was also recorded by one of my personal favorites...Chris Isaaks....and he does a spectacular job with it....I recommend you give it a listen..

Many others have recorded this signature song.....but none have done with it what Roy has...

So here we go....from 1961......Its the late great Roy Orbison......and...."Crying"....

I was all right for awhile
I could smile for awhile
But I saw you last night
You held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say, "Hello"

Oh, you wished me well
You, you couldn't tell
That I'd been crying over you
Crying over you

When you said, "So long"
Left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying
Crying, crying

It's hard to understand
But the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you
But it's true, so true
I love you even more
Than I did before

But, darling, what can I do?
For you don't love me
And I'll always be crying over you
Crying over you

Yes, now you're gone
And from this moment on
I'll be crying, crying
Crying, crying
Yeah, crying, crying
Over you

This for you Dad....I miss you :)

Roy's version is, of course, the definitive one.  I will put in a good word for Don McLean's 1978 cover, which was a substantial worldwide hit in its own right (US #5, US AC #2, US Country #6, Can #7, UK #1, etc.).  He produced a beautiful version that was a worthy tribute to Roy.

I was listening to a compilation of British Invasion-era rock today.  One of the many excellent tracks included was OVER UNDER SIDEWAYS DOWN by The Yardbirds.  While not played a lot on the radio these days, the group was a pivotal launching point for great guitarists in the 60's, having at various times included Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page as members.  Ultimately, the group disbanded, leaving Page owning the name and responsible for a number of contracted appearances with no band to perform them.  He put together a group of "New Yardbirds" who completed the scheduled tour dates before abandoning the name entirely and re-christening themselves as Led Zeppelin.

All that was still in the future, however, when this great number was issued in 1966.  The song was a significant hit for the group, reaching #13 in the US and making the top ten in their native UK.  Though Jeff Beck was the lead guitarist on the studio recording, most video performances date from a little later, after Jimmy Page had taken on those duties.  The song became the title track for its parent album in many areas, though in deference to the various titles the album had in different countries it is now generally referred to as "Roger The Engineer" (a reference to the cover art).

Regardless of what the album you found it on was called, the song itself is a great slab of early psychedelic guitar rock.  Oh, and it totally rocks!  So here's The Yardbirds with OVER UNDER SIDEWAYS DOWN.  Enjoy!

From the Michelle Archives....

To say I love Maroon 5 and Adam Levine would be a gross understatement.........I ADORE them.....(call me guys when you need a groupie)...

This is one of my favorite fun songs from them...its called....."Harder To Breathe"....

The song was written by frontman Adam Levine for the band's debut album "Songs About Jane" (2002).

The song, according to Adam, expresses tension, having been written quickly under trying circumstances. "Harder to Breathe" tells the story of a relationship Levine had with a woman named Jane, who, according to Levine was the "muse" in the band's album.   "Harder to Breathe" was met with positive reception by music critics, who praised the track's sound.

The song peaked at number six on Airplay Monitor. It also appeared on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart at number 31 and the Billboard Hot 100 at number 18. Internationally, the single charted at #13 in the United Kingdom. "Harder to Breathe" also appeared in the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand charts, respectively. The song also appears in Maroon 5's 2004 EP 1.22.03.Acoustic in an acoustic version and the live album Live – Friday the 13th (2005).

So here we go....from 2002 and my boys!....Maroon 5.....its...."Harder To Breathe"...

Does it kill
Does it burn
Is it painful to learn
That it's me that has all the control

Does it thrill
Does it sting
When you feel what I bring
And you wish that you had me to hold

When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
And like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe

This one's for Ewa......can't get you outta my mind baby.....:)
