Another from the Michelle Archives...

It's from 1993 and from my favorite guy...Chris Isaak......and its called....."Can't Do A Thing To Stop Me"

It's from the album..."San Francisco Days"...and it is another of those great songs in the Chris Isaak style.....
It's one I play when I'm out in the Bay in San Francisco......I'm sailing.....and all time stops....its beautiful......
And I'm wishing someone distant.....is so much closer to me at that moment...

San Francisco Days is the fourth album by Chris Isaak, released in 1993. The album was dedicated to the memory of Louie Beeson, who was the sound consultant.  The guitar work by the boys in the band is awesome as always...

The music video is typical Chris Isaak......sexy.......racy......and just right by me :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a7je1LuMMU

"You Can't Do A Thing To Stop Me"

Here I go again, dreaming, here I go again
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)

Having a good time baby, wish you were here
Thinking about you baby, it feels like you're near
And you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
No you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)

Days can be lonely, nights dreams come true
Making love with somebody, exactly like you
And you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
No you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
Oh try

(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
Can't do a thing to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now) Oh
(Can't do a thing to stop me)

Couldn't stop myself if I tried
Because I got you too deep inside

And you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
No you can't do a thing, to stop me
(Can't do a thing to stop me now)
Try

This is for Ewa.......because you can't do a thing to stop me.......and you don't want to.......thanks baby.....

Enjoy :)

Another from the Michelle Archives

Its from 2001....and its by an artist I really like.....Eminem......its called...."Stan"

While often controversial, Eminem is an artist who has helped change the face of rap and bring it more into the mainstream of music.  Rap often gets a bad "rap"...no pun intended and I personally love good rap....as I have always stated...I love good music...no matter the era...or the genre.

The song is perhaps Eminem's most critically acclaimed song and has been called a "cultural milestone"[14] and referred to as "Eminem's best song" by About.com.  Analyzing "Stan" in the Guardian newspaper, writer and literary critic Giles Foden compared Eminem to Robert Browning.

At the 2001 Grammy Awards, when he was facing all manner of criticism from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation over his lyrics, Eminem responded by performing "Stan" with singer Elton John, who is openly gay, singing Dido's lines.   Many of the profanities were substituted, for example, "You're like his favorite idol" in line of "You're like his fucking idol," and "stuff" for "shit". Recordings of this performance were available for download on Eminem's official website Eminem.com and, later, on his 2005 greatest hits release "Curtain Call: The Hits".

"Stan" has been listed by many as one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time. It was ranked #3 on a list of the greatest rap songs in history by Q magazine, and came 10th in a similar survey conducted by Top40-Charts.com.  Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ranked it #290, one of Eminem's two songs on the list along with "Lose Yourself;" in the updated 2010 list, it was ranked at #296. It ranked #45 on About.com's Top 100 Rap Songs.

The MTV "clean" version of the song and video is extensively and exhaustively censored, with significant portions from the first two verses and most of the third verse removed. In the MTV full version, which is 8:15 long, verse 3 censors Stan mentioning his girlfriend in the trunk (so "Shut up bitch" and "screaming in the trunk" is censored), and about him not slitting her throat, but tied her up, and "If she suffocates, she'll suffer more, then she'll die too", which "slit", "tied her up", "suffocates" and "die" is censored.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMK2zLMkGuc  (MTV Clean Version - You can find the original with little effort)

Sooo here we go!....and don't you dare touch that dial!......its Eminem......and his greatest hit to date......"Stan".....

Enjoy :)

From the Michelle Archives...

And now for something a little different...I have declared this weekend my official "And now for something a little different" music weekend"...

To start......this one is from an artist many may not have heard of.....Enya....

It's from 2001...and its called......"Flora's Secret"......from the hugely successful album...."A Day Without Rain"

"A Day Without Rain" is an album by Irish musician Enya, released in 2000. It won the Grammy Award for "Best New Age Album" of 2002. It is best known for the song "Only Time" which became a major success in 2000, and again in 2001 when it became identified with the 11 September 2001 attacks through extensive media use.

"A Day Without Rain" went on to become Enya's biggest selling release of her career and the "FIFTH" highest selling album worldwide of 2001. Note I said FIFTH BEST SELLING album of 2001!  It has sold over 25 million copies.  It is the top selling new age album of the 2000s in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

There are a number of beautiful songs on this album...one especially that became more mainstream popular...which I'll talk about in a later post.  This happens to just be maybe my favorite :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_767970&feature=iv&src_vid=puu3qFXnrzM&v=N8Jf3Eq6JCY

I don't know that I have heard anything so beautiful in a long time.....It moved me back then....and it still does.....

Sooooo here we go!!.....and don't you dare spin that dial!......from 2001.......its Enya.......and "Flora's Secret"

This for the daughter I hope to have someday......I thank her ahead of time and I hope to be the Mom she will be proud of :)

Thanks for indulging me.....enjoy :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....and something a little different

It's from 2001....from an artist named.......Enya.....and its called....."Only TIme"...

You've no doubt heard it and wondered what it was...who did it......now you know :)

"Only Time" is a song composed and recorded by Irish singer Enya, first released in November 2000. The release of this single coincided with the release of the album A Day Without Rain. In 2001 "Only Time" was released again as a remix. The track was remixed by the Swiss American Federation (S.A.F.) (Christian B. and Marc Dold) with a final remix by Enya's producer, Nicky Ryan.

Enya donated the earnings from the sale of that single to the Uniform Firefighters Association's Widows' and Children's Fund to help the families of fire fighters in the aftermath of 9/11. The song was also featured in the soundtrack of the motion picture Sweet November. To date, "Only Time" is Enya's biggest solo hit in the United States, where it peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #1 on the adult contemporary chart.

During the summer of 2001, NBC used the song in commercials to promote "Friends", which ended its season on a cliffhanger. The exposure helped the song gain familiarity and increased radio play. As a result, the song became Enya's first top 40 radio hit in 12 years. The song also appeared on an episode of "Viva La Bam" that was played in the montage of Bam Margera's Hummer after it was thrown off the cliff by Don Vito....which is classic btw.

The song was used in a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and as noted...Enya donated the proceeds from sale of the single to multiple 9/11 victims causes.

It's maybe the most beautiful song I have ever heard....and for me to say that ....is a pretty big deal :)

Sooooo here we go......and don't you dare change that dial!.....from 2001.....its Enya......and its....."Only Time"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wfYIMyS_dI

This is my tiny tribute to all the victims of 9/11......I only pray the families and friends of the victims have found peace and solace since then....it is one of my fondest wishes :)  I lost my roommate in college at Stanford...and my best friend.....Stephanie....in the 9/11 attacks.  I miss you every day Steph......

Enjoy :)

"Only Time"
Who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose, only time

Who can say why your heart sighs
As your love flies, only time
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies, only time

Who can say when the roads meet
That love might be in your heart
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your heart
Night keeps all your heart

Who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose
- Only time
And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time

Who knows? Only time

Those who enjoy Enya are encouraged to seek out the work of Clannad, who are comprised primarily of her family members and are where she herself got a start before going solo about 1983.  Their music has much of the same appeal that can be found on her albums.  A good place for the uninitiated to start is with the compilation album PASTPRESENT, which collects a number of their better-known tracks.  (Many of which you may have heard and wondered who performed them.)

Here they are with one of their best known tracks, the theme from "Harry's Game":

For a somewhat similar style that's developed in a more mainstream direction, it might also be worth checking out some of the stuff by The Corrs, who are an Irish group similarly comprised of siblings.  Their most popular album to date is TALK ON CORNERS, which has been issued in two somewhat different versions.  Their most successful single, however, came from the follow-up album, IN BLUE.  Here they are with it, BREATHLESS:

the Michelle Archives is back......

and with one I think fits for me right now.....its from that great Motown era that gave us so much great music...I may declare this a Michelle Motown Weekend Tribute :)

Its old...and I bet you haven't heard it...its from a group who had just this one hit.... The Undistputed Truth.

the song is......."Smiling Faces Sometimes"

My father told me to play this at points in my life...he said I'd understand.....in my business....he was so very right

The Undisputed Truth was a 1970s Motown recording act, assembled by record producer Norman Whitfield as a means for being able to experiment with his psychedelic soul production techniques. Joe Harris served as main lead singer, with Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans, formerly of The Delicates, on additional leads and background vocals.

The group's music and unusual costuming (large Afros and white makeup) typified the then-popular trend of "psychedelic soul" which producer Norman Whitfield had inaugurated. A number of their singles became minor hits, and many of them were also songs for Whitfield's main act, The Temptations, among them "You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone."

"Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label. The song was originally recorded by the Temptations in 1971. Producer Norman Whitfield had the song re-recorded by the "Undisputed Truth" the same year, resulting in a number-three Billboard Hot 100 position for the group. "Smiling Faces" was the only Top 40 single released by the Undisputed Truth, and was included on their debut album The Undisputed Truth.

Both versions of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" deal with the same subject matter, "back-stabbing" friends who do their friends wrong behind their backs ("Smiling faces sometimes...they don't tell the truth...smiling faces sometimes tell lies"), but in different ways.

Smiling Faces

Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy)
Misery (misery)
Envy I tell you, you can't see behind smiling faces
Smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
I'm telling you beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now, beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Your enemy won't do you no harm
Cause you'll know where he's coming from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice I'm only try' to school ya

So here we go...and don't you dare touch that dial......its The Undisputed Truth.....and......"Smiling Faces"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wKyXA_nMVQ

So who is this dedicated to..you might ask?   Allow me a little mystery will you?  *grins evilly*

You were right Dad....as always.....love you......thanks :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....on this Motown weekend tribute by yours truly....

Its one of my favorite old songs.......and it makes me smile no matter how bad my love life gets...

Its from a group called the Main Ingredient...from 1972.....and its called..."Everybody Plays The Fool".....

The Main Ingredient is an American soul and R&B group best known for their 1972 hit song, "Everybody Plays the Fool".
The group is lead by the great Cuba Gooding Sr....and his so distinctive singing voice.....you might know him as the father of one of my favorite actors....Cuba Gooding Jr.

The group was formed in Harlem, New York in 1964 as a trio called the Poets, composed of lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons, Jr., and Panama-born Tony Silvester. They made their first recordings for Leiber & Stoller's Red Bird label, but soon changed their name to the Insiders and signed with RCA. After a couple of singles, they changed their name once again in 1968, this time permanently to the Main Ingredient, taking the name from a Coke bottle.

The Main Ingredient then teamed up with record producer Bert DeCoteaux. Under his direction, the Main Ingredient reached the R&B Top 30 for the first time in 1970 with "You've Been My Inspiration." A cover of The Impressions' "I'm So Proud" broke the Top 20, and "Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling in Love)" went into the Top 10. They scored again with the McPherson-penned black power anthem "Black Seeds Keep on Growing," but tragedy struck in 1971: McPherson, who had suddenly taken ill with leukemia, died unexpectedly. Stunned, Silvester and Simmons regrouped with new lead singer Cuba Gooding, Sr., who had served as a backing vocalist on some of their previous recordings and had filled in on tour during McPherson's brief illness.

The Gooding era began auspiciously enough with the million-selling smash "Everybody Plays the Fool", which hit number two R&B and number three pop to become the group's biggest hit. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in September 1972. The accompanying album, Bitter Sweet, became their first to hit the Top 10 on the R&B album chart; its follow-up, 1973's Afrodisiac, featured several songs written or co-written by Stevie Wonder, although it did not produce any huge successes on the singles charts. They peaked at number eight on the R&B chart in 1974 with "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely", which sold over a million copies, and also reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.

So here we go from 1972!.....and don't you dare touch that dial!....its the Main Ingredient...and..."Everybody Plays The Fool"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXGa__ECvnM

This is just for me.......have a great weekend everyone......make it wonderful :)
