the Michelle Archives is back......

and with one I think fits for me right now.....its from that great Motown era that gave us so much great music...I may declare this a Michelle Motown Weekend Tribute :)

Its old...and I bet you haven't heard it...its from a group who had just this one hit.... The Undistputed Truth.

the song is......."Smiling Faces Sometimes"

My father told me to play this at points in my life...he said I'd understand.....in my business....he was so very right

The Undisputed Truth was a 1970s Motown recording act, assembled by record producer Norman Whitfield as a means for being able to experiment with his psychedelic soul production techniques. Joe Harris served as main lead singer, with Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans, formerly of The Delicates, on additional leads and background vocals.

The group's music and unusual costuming (large Afros and white makeup) typified the then-popular trend of "psychedelic soul" which producer Norman Whitfield had inaugurated. A number of their singles became minor hits, and many of them were also songs for Whitfield's main act, The Temptations, among them "You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone."

"Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a soul song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for the Motown label. The song was originally recorded by the Temptations in 1971. Producer Norman Whitfield had the song re-recorded by the "Undisputed Truth" the same year, resulting in a number-three Billboard Hot 100 position for the group. "Smiling Faces" was the only Top 40 single released by the Undisputed Truth, and was included on their debut album The Undisputed Truth.

Both versions of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" deal with the same subject matter, "back-stabbing" friends who do their friends wrong behind their backs ("Smiling faces sometimes...they don't tell the truth...smiling faces sometimes tell lies"), but in different ways.

Smiling Faces

Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
The truth is in the eyes
Cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember a smile is just
A frown turned upside down
My friend let me tell you
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth, uh
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
I'm telling you beware
Beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy)
Misery (misery)
Envy I tell you, you can't see behind smiling faces
Smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
(Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)
I'm telling you beware, beware of the handshake
That hides the snake
Listen to me now, beware
Beware of that pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes
They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces
Tell lies and I got proof
Your enemy won't do you no harm
Cause you'll know where he's coming from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice I'm only try' to school ya

So here we go...and don't you dare touch that dial......its The Undisputed Truth.....and......"Smiling Faces"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wKyXA_nMVQ

So who is this dedicated to..you might ask?   Allow me a little mystery will you?  *grins evilly*

You were right Dad....as always.....love you......thanks :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....on this Motown weekend tribute by yours truly....

Its one of my favorite old songs.......and it makes me smile no matter how bad my love life gets...

Its from a group called the Main Ingredient...from 1972.....and its called..."Everybody Plays The Fool".....

The Main Ingredient is an American soul and R&B group best known for their 1972 hit song, "Everybody Plays the Fool".
The group is lead by the great Cuba Gooding Sr....and his so distinctive singing voice.....you might know him as the father of one of my favorite actors....Cuba Gooding Jr.

The group was formed in Harlem, New York in 1964 as a trio called the Poets, composed of lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons, Jr., and Panama-born Tony Silvester. They made their first recordings for Leiber & Stoller's Red Bird label, but soon changed their name to the Insiders and signed with RCA. After a couple of singles, they changed their name once again in 1968, this time permanently to the Main Ingredient, taking the name from a Coke bottle.

The Main Ingredient then teamed up with record producer Bert DeCoteaux. Under his direction, the Main Ingredient reached the R&B Top 30 for the first time in 1970 with "You've Been My Inspiration." A cover of The Impressions' "I'm So Proud" broke the Top 20, and "Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling in Love)" went into the Top 10. They scored again with the McPherson-penned black power anthem "Black Seeds Keep on Growing," but tragedy struck in 1971: McPherson, who had suddenly taken ill with leukemia, died unexpectedly. Stunned, Silvester and Simmons regrouped with new lead singer Cuba Gooding, Sr., who had served as a backing vocalist on some of their previous recordings and had filled in on tour during McPherson's brief illness.

The Gooding era began auspiciously enough with the million-selling smash "Everybody Plays the Fool", which hit number two R&B and number three pop to become the group's biggest hit. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in September 1972. The accompanying album, Bitter Sweet, became their first to hit the Top 10 on the R&B album chart; its follow-up, 1973's Afrodisiac, featured several songs written or co-written by Stevie Wonder, although it did not produce any huge successes on the singles charts. They peaked at number eight on the R&B chart in 1974 with "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely", which sold over a million copies, and also reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.

So here we go from 1972!.....and don't you dare touch that dial!....its the Main Ingredient...and..."Everybody Plays The Fool"

This is just for me.......have a great weekend everyone......make it wonderful :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....and a followup to Watchers pick...

Its by the great Van Halen.....and its called ......"Little Guitars"

"Little Guitars" is a song performed by Van Halen. It was included on their album "Diver Down".
The song is notable for its intro, an acoustic flamenco-style solo by Edward. This was accomplished by using his right hand to pick a single-note trill on the high E string. He then used his left hand to to play the melody on the A and D strings using hammer-ons and pull-offs.

As Eddie himself said...

"Everyone thinks I overdubbed on that. Then I show them how I did it. Classical guitarists can do that, but they finger-pick. I can't finger-pick. No, I definitely cheated. I'm good at that. If there's a sound in my head and I want it, I'll find a way to do it. I bought a couple Montoya records. I actually tried to finger-pick, and I'm going, 'Screw this, it's too hard.'"

In addition to the intro, the song is also notable for the mini-Les Paul guitar that Edward used for the main track. This is the only Van Halen recording that the guitar was used for.

If you love playing the guitar as I do....it seldom gets much better...unless its the great "Stairway to Heaven"...which I'll discuss in another post.

So here we go....and don't you dare touch that dial...its one of my Guitar Heros and 1982............Van Halen.......and ......."Little Guitars"

This is for my Mom...for having to put up with my guitar playing today.......I love you Mom :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....

And this is one that just hit me last night as we played it at the jazz club during one set....those who know me know I am a blues historian...I love it and love to play guitar with a band when I get a chance

This song is from 1962....and the great John Lee Hooker.....and its called....."Boom Boom"

and don't let the age....1962...fool you....this song holds up wonderfully.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X70VMrH3yBg

"Boom Boom" is a blues song written by John Lee Hooker and recorded in 1961. The song was a hit in the US in 1962 and 1992 in the UK. It is one of Hooker's most identifiable songs and has been recorded by numerous blues and other artists, including a 1965 Pop hit by The Animals.

"Boom Boom" is an uptempo stop-time blues song, notated in 4/4 time in the key of F (the 1992 re-recording featuring Jimmie Vaughan is in the key of E). The verses of the song do not follow a typical twelve-bar blues pattern, though it reverts to a standard twelve-bar pattern for the extended instrumental break in the middle of Hooker's recording.  According to Hooker, he wrote the song during an extended engagement at the Apex Bar in Detroit. "I would never be on time; I always would be late comin' in. And she [the bartender Willa] kept saying, 'Boom boom—you late again'. Every night: 'Boom, boom—you late again'. I said 'Hmm, that's a song!"

Hooker had a unique sense of timing, which demanded "big-eared sidemen".  Backing John Lee Hooker (vocal and guitar) are members of the Funk Brothers (Joe Hunter (piano), James Jamerson (bass), and Benny Benjamin (drums)); plus Larry Veeder (guitar), Hank Cosby (tenor saxophone), and Andrew "Mike" Terry (baritone saxophone).

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001) was a highly influential American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. Hooker was born in Mississippi, the son of a sharecropper, and rose to prominence performing his own interpretation of what was originally a unique style of country blues. He developed a 'talking blues' style that became his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music was metrically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his own genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving rhythm into his blues guitar playing and singing. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen'" (1948), "I'm in the Mood" (1951) and "Boom Boom" (1962), the first two reaching #1 on the Billboard R&B chart.

This is the song Javier Bardem played over external speakers from the attack helicopter as he came in on the estate at the end of the James Bond movie...."Skyfall"

If you want to know why I love playing guitar and the blues......this song tells you all you need to know :)

So here we go!.....one of my great favorites.....from John Lee Hooker.....its...."Boom Boom"

This one is for Sadie....Emily....and bailey (even unconscious).....who made the rookie.newcomer a total blast.....with just a little bit still left to come....I love you guys :)

A replay from the Michelle Archives....

Its one of my all time favs...its from my boys at Maroon 5.....and my best guy Adam Levine...

Its called......"One More Night".......God I love this song......

"One More Night" is a song performed by American pop rock band Maroon 5. The song was released on June 19, 2012, as the second single from their fourth studio album, Overexposed (2012). It was written by Adam Levine, Shellback, Max Martin and Savan Kotecha, while production was handled by Shellback and Martin. It is a pop song with a strong influence of reggae. Lyrically, it talks about not getting along with someone and hoping he only stays with her just "one more night". It is built upon the idea of the quintessential push and pull between what the heart, mind and body want, which are usually opposing things.

The song received mostly favorable reviews from music critics. Most of them complimented the reggae influence on the track, Levine's vocals and labeled it a "summer catchy song". However, some critics perceived a lack of identity and criticized the song's melody. The song debuted at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100, while it debuted at number 27 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. It has peaked at number 1 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. It currently is Maroon 5's most successful single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 9 consecutive weeks at #1. The song has also been a success on the Australian Singles Chart, reaching number 2 and topping the New Zealand Singles Chart and the South Korean Gaon International Chart. The song sold 6.9 million copies becoming the 8th best selling song worldwide in 2012.

"One More Night"
You and I go hard at each other like we're going to war.
You and I go rough, we keep throwing things and slamming the door.
You and I get so damn dysfunctional, we stopped keeping score.
You and I get sick, yeah, I know that we can't do this no more.

Yeah, but baby there you go again, there you go again, making me love you.
Yeah, I stopped using my head, using my head, let it all go.
Got you stuck on my body, on my body, like a tattoo.
And now I'm feeling stupid, feeling stupid, crawling back to you.

So I cross my heart and I hope to die
That I'll only stay with you one more night
And I know I said it a million times
But I'll only stay with you one more night

Try to tell you "no" but my body keeps on telling you "yes".
Try to tell you "stop", but your lipstick got me so out of breath.
I'll be waking up in the morning, probably hating myself.
And I'll be waking up, feeling satisfied but guilty as hell.

Yeah, but baby there you go again, there you go again, making me love you.
(Making me love you)
Yeah, I stopped using my head, using my head, let it all go.
(I let it all go)
Got you stuck on my body, on my body, like a tattoo.
(Like a tattoo, yeah)
And now I'm feeling stupid, feeling stupid, crawling back to you.

So I cross my heart and I hope to die
(Yeah)
That I'll only stay with you one more night
(Oh)
And I know I said it a million times
(Yeah)
But I'll only stay with you one more night
(Yeah)

Yeah, baby, give me one more night
Yeah, baby, give me one more night (whoa, yeah)
Yeah, baby, give me one more night (oh, yeah, yeah)

Yeah, but baby there you go again, there you go again making me love you.
Yeah, I stopped using my head, using my head, let it all go.
Got you stuck on my body, on my body like a tattoo.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

So I cross my heart and I hope to die
(Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh)
That I'll only stay with you one more night
(Oh oh oh oh oh oh)
And I know I said it a million times
(Oh, I said it a million times)
But I'll only stay with you one more night
(Yeah, baby give me one more night)

So I cross my heart and I hope to die (yeah, yeah)
That I'll only stay with you one more night (yeah, yeah)
And I know I said it a million times (yeah, yeah)
But I'll only stay with you one more night (yeah, yeah)

I don't know, whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GGP8ZRVC0s

So here we go!...and don't you dare touch that dial!...its my boys with Maroon 5 and Adam Levine...

its one of my favorite songs of all time.........."One More Night"......

This is for Catwacher......I know I'm a challenge......I'm just a work in progress.....
love,
Chelley

Enjoy :)

Another from the Michelle Archives.....and one that's quite appropriate right now

Its from Badfinger.......and its called ......"Baby Blue"

On last night's series finale of "Breaking Bad", Walter White's final moments were soundtracked by a song befitting for the mastermind behind the blue meth: UK power-pop band' Badfinger's lilting lulalby "Baby Blue," a song that hints at both reverence ("I would show the special love I have for you, my baby blue") and regret ("I guess I got what I deserved").

As we saw Walter White (Bryan Cranston) -- bleeding and near death -- back in a lab one last time, he had just the song to send him off. "Baby Blue," from British rock band Badfinger, played over Walt's last minutes. The song is from the band's album "Straight Up" and was a Billboard top 20 hit in 1972. The song was reportedly written about Dixie Armstrong, a woman lead singer Pete Ham had dated while on tour in the U.S.

"Baby Blue's" lyrics are appropriate for the end of Walt's journey, with lines such as  "I guess I got what I deserved" and "I would show the special love I have for you, my baby blue." On The Talking Bad, show creator Vince Gilligan said the scene in which the song is used illustrated Walt's love for his blue product.

"Baby Blue" is a song recorded by the rock/pop band Badfinger for inclusion on their 1971 album, Straight Up. The song was written by Pete Ham, produced by Todd Rundgren, and released on Apple Records.

"Baby Blue" was released as a single in the US on March 6, 1972, in a blue-tinted picture sleeve and featuring a new mix. Because Al Steckler, the head of Apple US, felt that it needed a stronger hook in the opening, he remixed the track with engineer Eddie Kramer in February 1972, applying heavy reverb to the snare during the first verse and middle eight.
It would become the group's last Top 20 single, peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.

"Baby Blue" made an appearance in Martin Scorsese's 2006 Oscar-winning film, "The Departed" and in again.... the TV show "Breaking Bad" where it was played during the final minutes of the show's series finale, "Felina". Vince Gilligan, the show's creator, implied on "Talking Bad" that it represented the main character's love of his own creation, the blue meth. Following the song's use in the hit show, streams online increased in popularity exponentially almost immediately following the broadcast.

So here we go......from 1972.....its Badfinger.........and......"Baby Blue"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beM28FLdAzk

This song is dedicated to all those......who think I have got what I deserved.....and more.....its dedicated to those "wannabe" friends

"Baby Blue"
Guess I got what I deserve
Kept you waiting there, too long my love
All that time, without a word
Didn't know you'd think, that I'd forget, or I'd regret
The special love I have for you, my Baby Blue

All the days became so long
Did you really think, I'd do you wrong
Dixie, when I let you go
Thought you'd realize, that I would know, I would show
The special love I have for you, my Baby Blue

What can I do, what can I say
Except that I want you by my side
How can I show, you, show me a way
Don't you know, the times I tried
Guess that's all I have to say
Except the feeling just gets stronger, everyday
Just one thing, before I go

Take good care, baby, let me know, let it grow
The special love, you have for me, my Dixie dear

My favorite part.....

I think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world
Lookin' for that woman girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will
And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day
