used a simulator + roleplaying to determine matchs....had a title and storylines etc....

Wonder how'd it work and thinking of starting my own

You may be recalling either the FWA or BRA, both of which I believe used the Zeus simulator.  Its matches were clunkily played out, and despite the statistics used, the match results could seem utterly random.  But it could still make for an interesting raw guideline for writers who wanted to expand on the matches.

The real fun of those leagues was the roleplaying posts on their message boards...at least for me.
