I have hurt Carmen and she has come back - repeatedly. But as I peel myself away from her this time, it feels different. She rolls up against the ropes and I cannot see her face but her body language tells me she's hurt or hurting at the very least. But a wounded animal is a dangerous animal and until the bell rings, I have to treat her with respect and caution. I pace, breathing, refreshing, wanting more. The ref is talking to Carmen and I see her head nod, then shake, but I cannot hear what he is saying. He doesn't call for the bell and Carmen reaches up for the ropes, using them to get up - or try to get up. The ref turns at me and glares, then barks, "Let her get up - clean break!" I nod and continue to pace, a few trying to cheer the champ on but many cheering for a new champ.
