Violent Grudge vs Bad Day on Broome Street
« on: December 25, 2020, 05:55:31 PM »
In Celebration of their 30th anniversary
A comparison
Violent Grudge vs Bad Day on Broome Street

1.  The actresses
Lots to choose from here.  Young Venus de Light positively oozes attitude, sexiness, and toughness all at once.  Heck, she even smokes in bed (pun not intended, yet still appropriate).  Her opponent is a worthy and intriguing foil.  Both manage to convince as 'the bad girl'/villainess.  Tasha Voux, the blonde in BDBS, is a natural as a foul-mouthed late-'80s New Yorker (candidly, she's not acting in this dimension of her character; just being herself).  Her opponent is likewise a convincing 2nd-generation diverse NY immigrant.  But Venus's flawless body, flaunted so uninhibited, takes the cake.
VG 1.0, BDBS 0.0

2.  The characters/leads
The protagonists/lead characters
Broome Street's tough-as-nails New Yorkers will clearly fight anyone, anytime, anywhere:  at a club, in an alley, on the street; heck, even in each others' apartment.  VG's two protagonists have clearly always wanted to fight each other, but have held back for years (since at least high school, possibly longer).  Once they cut loose, it's No Holds Barred.  But BDBS's vixens are in each others' hair mere minutes after meeting.  You go, girls.
VG 1.0, BDBS 1.0

3.  The premise
Love triangle in both films.  2 girls, 1 guy.  Maybe a slight edge in BDBS, as there's chatter about a fiancee.  It's hard to tell if VG's 'Warren' is a genuine boyfriend or a, ... ahem ... John.  But kudos to VG for having Warren warn both girls about the danger of a direct confrontation.... and both girls ignoring him.
Push.
VG 1.5, BDBS 1.5

4.  The trash talk
Not much to speak of in VG--since Venus's plan was to ambush her enemy, and since Carla THOUGHT she was successfully keeping her cheating a secret from Teala, there was a missed opportunity for some cat and mouse banter between the ladies.  BDBS does a good job showing both ladies as hurt-yet-angry, angry-yet-hurt at the cuckolding by the brunette.
BDBS 2.5, VG 1.5

5.  The fight venue
Didn't love the wrestling mat on the floor in BDBS.  The cluttered apartment of Teala's is also .... confusing.  Goodness, Teala, why so messy?  Tasha gets props for going over to her enemy's place to kick her ass.
BDBS 3.5, VG 1.5

6.  The fight
Teala and Carla seem like they enjoy fighting.  Some fists would have been nice, though.  BDBS has blood at the end--fake, but lots of it.
BDBS 4.5, VG 1.5

7. Intangibles
BDBS tacks on a sister fight as a bonus.
BDBS 5.5, VG 1.5

BDBS is one of my favorite all time catfight films! I'd argue that your comparison should have been VG and the ENTIRE BDBS film. You seemed to focus mostly on the first fight of BDBS for your comparison when I feel the main purpose of the video was to set up for the final sister fight. Also... are there anymore catfights involving the bigger curvy sister in the second half of BDBS? She was sexy as hell in her role and the two put on a hell of a fight. I wish the smaller girl did more fights as well. I've only seen her in one other fight (which was GREAT) it was from the witches coven series and she had short hair.

A Comparison
Violent Grudge vs the BDBS Sister Fight (BDBSSF)

1.  The actresses
Venus deLight, especially the circa age 23 version, is going to be nearly impossible to beat as a catfight actress (perhaps the 1979 version of Bo Derek?  the 1999 version of Britney Spears?  That's the level of hotness Venus was bringing in 1991).  The BDBSSF actresses are two more credible tough-talking New Yorkers, but in the sexiness department, not even the same ZIP code as Teala and Carla.
VG 1.0, BDBSSF 0.0

2.  The characters/leads
We know these two ladies are the sisters of the opening segment's combatants.  Intriguing concept to lose a streetfight, then to send your sister to beat up your wounded opponent.  When you have a sister as big as the girl she sends, why not send her in the first place?  Sorry, I needed more development to "feel it".  We went straight to the fight way too fast.
VG 2.0, BDBSSF 0.0

3.  The premise
Intriguing that the big girl THOUGHT she was fighting her sister's rival, but was actually fighting the sister of her sister's rival.  Then again, in the end, did it really matter?  She would have kicked both their asses anyways.  The filmmakers set up a scenario, but then didn't use it.
VG 3.0, BDBSSF 0.0

4.  Trashtalk
Epic blooper here.  The big girl says, "I hear you're going to tear my tits off and shove them up my ass."  But the blonde from the first fight (the big girl's sister) issued that threat, not the brunette.  Big error.
VG 4.0, BDBSSF 0.0

5.  The fight venue
Fight 2 happens on the same wrestling mat (sigh) as fight 1.  Which I awarded the win over versus Carla's cluttered mess, so I need to do so here as well.  (Plus:  cool watching machine in the Broome Street fight apartment.)
VG 4.0, BDBSSF 1.0

6.  The fight
The Sister Fight girls seem a little tentative about what to do about their size disparity, which makes it awkward for them to have standing clinches.  They spend a lot of time rolling on the floor, which in a real fight would have been to the advantage of the heavier big girl.  Good punches in the end, but not enough of them.  Things are just getting good, and the fight ends in a KO.
VG 5.0, BDBSSF 1.0

7.  Intangibles
So, blondie and her enforcer sister kick the shit out of the other woman and HER sister.  Did it working?  Did blondie win the man?  We never find out.
VG 6.0, BDBSSF 1.0

So, yes, BDBS has a second fight.  But it doesn't measure up to Violent Grudge, nor to its prequel, the rival lovers themselves fighting.

Nice reviews, love the old CW fights.

Would really like your thoughts on the newcomer vs $600 wager, my two favourite fight videos.

Venus and "Teala" (real name Greta? or Gretchen?) had a long history of fighting/wrestling each other; including  at least 3 Video Sports Limited competitive matches; they seem to enjoy competing with each other, and were not shy about locking up, body to body - and that really shows in the Violent Grudge fights; first off, in the early matches, they are very close in size and build, both with fabulous bodies (and certainly deserving of the CW promo description, "when these two big breasted, hard muscled women come together, there's bound to be a catfight"); and they have no reservations getting naked and locking up; in fact, they seem to really enjoy going at  each other. It's a shame the video quality on VG1 and 2 is so bad; by VG3, Venus had put on a great deal of weight (even more so by VG4) so the fights lack the same intensity; they are more like mismatches. Teala stayed fabulous looking throughout her career; I'd love to see her today!
Also, rumor has it that before actually starting California Wildcats, "Trish" the producer used to stage live naked catfight fantasy exhibitions for customers, and that Venus and Teala were two of her early partners in this - she used to advertise, in LA personal ads, for "rent a live nude battling couple" -  they would come to your house, and act out a fantasy scene, then wrestle naked in front of you.

Two classic videos.   Bad Day is very underrated, yet when you put it up against VG, it seems not quite as good to me.  Face it--Venus and Teala were 9.5+ out of 10 in the looks department, so if you give them a good story and a fairly long and competitive match, it was going to be superb.

Fun irrelevant fact--I remember reading on Venus' old Yahoo blog (a long time ago) that she was a big Minnesota Vikings (NFL) fan.
