Apartment Style Wrestling vs. Catfights
« on: November 29, 2021, 02:57:28 AM »
Hi all,

As I was working on a story concept, I realized I needed clarification on something. With so many female fight experts and historians here, I thought this would be the place to ask.

What exactly is “apartment style wrestling” and how does it differ from a catfight? Is it wrestling that allows “catty” things like hair pulling and slapping? Is there a line of demarcation between the two styles or is it arbitrary? Being the researcher that I am, I learned that it originated in pro wrestling magazines from the 1970s with fictional stories accompanied by bikini models in obviously fake poses for still photos. But what exactly it was still seems vague. Or is it supposed to be vague?

Does anyone here prefer AW over catfights?

Thanks,
Kiva

It's really the same thing. Just a catfight/wrestling match with an apartment as the setting. Regarding those magazines you refer to. I had every one of them. It was Sports Review Wrestling that had them every month. I couldn't wait to go into the store on the corner that carried them and buy it each month. Of course they weren't real matches but who cared? The pictures were hot as shit and with no internet around that was the ultimate.

My best guess (taken with a grain of salt as all I do is write) is that apartment style is more or less just another term for an arranged catfight.. possibly with an attempt at some sort of rules....so there's really not any tangible difference for the most part. Kind of like French Vanilla vs Vanilla.... and now I want ice cream!

Thanks to both of you. I think I get it.

npom, I found some of those magazines online. The pics are certainly impressive, and the stories are entertaining to say the least. I imagine a lot of teenage boys in the 70s were buying up the mags and hiding their stash from their parents. Thanks for the insight.

OMG!…what a website. As npom said, I can see how, prior to the internet, this magazine was gold to anyone with the catfight fetish. It’s funny they were sold in shops and newstands. (Can I have a few bucks, Mom? I’m just going to buy a wrestling magazine.”) Thanks for sharing.

if you are looking to understand the vibe of that era and the scene I wound suggest a novella called Bad Hombre by JT Edson. I think its on Amazon for a couple of bucks.

Oddly enough I LITERALLY (1min ago) just finished typing a comment on another thread going on a mini rant about how people on this site don't tend to like apartment wrestling LOL. IMO Apartment Wrestling is fake and Catfights are "Real". I like both but I lean moreso to Apartment Wrestling because they check all the boxes and there's way more steady content and variety in the fake fight genre. The downside to apartment wrestling is sometimes it can be waaaay too phony and hokey. The apartment matches when the girls participating are giggling and smiling way too much and the participants have absolutely ZERO athletic ability or desire to get even the slightest bit rough just comes off as plain bad and unwatchable.

I suspect many here feel the same way. AW (done well) seems to be the perfect stuff of fantasy. The images and concepts are very sexy. Even  if it’s “fake”, it provides tons of fuel for the imagination and that’s all we really need for our fantasies to be what we want them to be. Thanks for your comment.

In other words, Apartment Wrestling done right is like the high level of pro wrestling in the catfight world?

My reasoning being that a high level pro wrestling federation (like a WWE) is good enough to make you suspend your disbelief and wonder if it's real. I think a well done AW match/product could do the same thing. Interesting topic.

Exactly. But then there's also wrestling on the level of GLOW which depending on your tolerance level is either fun cheese or unwatchable trash (BTW I loved GLOW). It's all a matter of taste and I'm lenient when it comes to Apartment Wrestling so you can be WWE or GLOW in my eyes as long as it's entertaining. Now keep in mind I do have my limit on what I will or will not accept as "wrestling/catfighting" fake fights can also be boring again if too fake.

First one I purchased was January 1977, Gail vs Kayla. I was 15 at the time.   I bought every one going forward. My three favorites were June 1977, December 1977 and February 1978.  Within the magazine there were ads for more erotic and revealing magazines that you could get through the mail. Needless to say it was a chore to make sure I got to the mail before my parents did! I purchased Catfights Galore and Big and Busty Brawlers that way. They featured several porn actresses of the day including Candy Samples, Uschi Digard. Hannah Veeck and others.  Candy Samples was my favorite. I would look at the pictures of her dominating her opponent and imagine her dominating my best friend's mom the same way. Good times!
